Questions & Answers
Everything people ask before they walk in — pawn loans, selling, layaway, gold, and firearms. If it isn't here, call and ask a person.
Getting started
Where are you, and when are you open?
9721 Dayton Pike, Soddy Daisy, TN 37379 — on Dayton Pike in Soddy Daisy. Monday–Friday 9 AM to 6 PM, Saturday 9 AM to 5 PM, closed Sunday. Holiday hours are posted on the door and on this site.
Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk in any time we're open. If you're bringing something unusual or a large lot, a quick call ahead helps us have the right person at the counter.
What do I need to bring?
A valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID. You must be 18 or older to pawn or sell, 18 for long guns, and 21 for handguns.
Do you do car title loans?
No. We're a pawn shop and gun store. Title loans are a separate business under a separate Tennessee license, and we've chosen not to be in it.
Pawn loans
Do you check my credit?
No. A pawn loan is secured by the item you bring in. Your credit is never checked and a pawn loan never appears on your credit report — whether you pay it back or not.
What does a pawn loan cost in Tennessee?
Tennessee law allows licensed pawnbrokers 2% interest plus a 20% service fee per 30-day period, and every licensed shop in the state works under the same ceiling. On a $100 loan that's $22 for the first 30 days. The exact dollar amounts are printed on your ticket before you sign.
How long do I have to pay it back?
30 days, plus Tennessee's 30-day grace period. You can also renew by paying only the charges that have accrued, and you can redeem early any time.
What happens if I can't pay?
Nothing bad. You forfeit the item and owe nothing further — no collections, no calls, no credit report. The item becomes ours.
Is my item safe while it's pawned?
Yes. Pledged items are tagged, logged, and stored separately from the sales floor. Firearms are stored in a secure area. Nothing you've pawned is ever put out for sale while your loan is active.
Selling to us
How does selling work?
Bring the item and your ID. We inspect and test it in front of you and make one straight cash offer. Take it and leave with cash, or take your item back — no pressure either way.
Should I sell or pawn?
If you might want the item back, pawn it: cash now and up to 60 days to reclaim it. If you're done with it, selling usually puts more cash in your hand. We'll show you both numbers.
Do you buy broken jewelry or scrap gold?
Yes. Gold is priced by weight and purity, so a broken chain or a single earring is worth the same per gram as a whole piece.
How do you price gold?
We test it at the counter while you watch, weigh it, and price it against that day's spot market rate. Weight × purity × today's rate = your offer, written down.
Layaway
How does layaway work?
Put 10% down (minimum $10) and the item is held off the floor. Make a payment of at least 15% of the price every 30 days until it's paid — up to six months depending on price. No interest, no fees when you finish.
What if I cancel a layaway?
A restocking fee of 33% of the pre-tax price is kept and the rest of what you've paid is refunded in cash or as store credit — your choice. If you've paid less than the fee, you owe nothing further.
Can I put a firearm on layaway?
Yes. It works the same way; at the final payment you complete ATF Form 4473 and pass the Tennessee background check before the firearm is released. If the check is denied, the layaway is cancelled with the restocking fee waived and everything you paid is refunded.
Firearms & FFL transfers
How much is an FFL transfer?
$40 flat, and that includes the Tennessee Instant Check System (TICS) background check. No add-ons.
How do I have a gun shipped to you?
Give the seller our name and address — Big Ben's Gun & Pawn, 9721 Dayton Pike, Soddy Daisy, TN 37379 — as your receiving FFL. Dealers can request a copy of our license at [email protected]; we send it dealer-to-dealer the same day. We'll call you when it arrives.
What do I bring to pick up a transfer?
A valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID with your current address. If the address isn't current, bring a second government document that shows it (vehicle registration, hunting license, tax bill). You'll complete ATF Form 4473 and we run the TICS check.
How old do I have to be?
18 or older for rifles and shotguns; 21 or older for handguns.
What if my background check is denied?
You can appeal to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation within 30 days, and we'll walk you through it. If the denial stands, we'll help arrange the firearm's return to the seller; return shipping is the buyer's responsibility.
I pawned my own gun — do I need a background check to get it back?
Yes. Tennessee rules require a TICS check when a firearm is redeemed from pawn, even though it's your gun.
Do you accept transfers from private sellers?
Call us before the seller ships so we can tell you exactly what documentation we'll need. Shipments from licensed dealers, manufacturers, and online marketplaces are welcome.
